In 1984, a group
of Grosse Pointe Shores residents formed the Grosse Pointe Shores
Improvement Foundation, a privately funded, nonprofit organization.
The Foundation was established as a means of initiating and funding
community enhancements.
One of their
first tasks was the beautification of the landscaping and the overall
improvement of Lake Shore Road. Hundreds of trees have been planted.
The traffic islands and lake side were re-sodded. Landscape gardens
were created and a sprinkler system was installed. The older model
street signs were replaced with lighted signs.
All of this
has been made possible through membership dues, contributions, gifts
to the Endowment Fund, bequests and other fund raising activities.
